When the saints go marching in เป็นเพลงเก่าแก่มากจนไม่สามารถค้นประวัติที่แท้จริงได้ บ้างก็ว่าต้นกำเนิดมาจากเพลงอาฟริกัน-อเมริกัน ที่เล่นในแนวเพลงแจส ด้วยเครื่องเป่าพวกทองเหลือง นิยมนำมาช้ในขบวนแห่พิธีฝังศพ ของชาวเมือง New Orleans รัฐ Louisiana ซึ่งยึดถือกันเป็นประเพณีเก่าแก่ของเมือง และมักเรียกกันว่า Jazz funeral ซึ่งในเที่ยวที่แห่ไปฝังนั้นจะเล่นแบบช้าๆ ใช้ปากฮัมทำนอง แต่ขากลับวงดนตรีจะเล่นกันแบบ"มันมัน" ซึ่งประเพณีเหล่านี้คงคงมีอยู่จนปัจจุบัน ต่อมาภายหลังถูกนำมาเผยแพร่จากนักร้องหลายๆคน ด้วยท่วงทำนองที่แตกต่างกัน เริ่มจาก ปี 1930
Louise Armstrong ได้เขียนเพลงนี้ตามคำบอกเล่าของพี่สาวและใช้ดนตรีพวกเครื่องเป่า จนมาถึงศตวรรษที่ 20 Buddy Bolden's Band นำมาทำใหม่ ส่วนใน versions เพลง Pop ก็มีของ Judy Garland และมาถึงยุคต้นๆของ Rock and Roll ที่นักร้องผิวหมึก Fats Domino นำมาร้องซึ่งยังเป็นในแนวเดิมของเมือง New Orleans
ยุคของ Jerry Lee Lewis,Bill Haley & His Comets ซึ่งเป็นร้อคแอนด์โรลเต็มตัว จนมาถึง The Beatles. Elvis Presley และในยุคต่อมาไตเติ้ลของเพลง "Saints Go Marching" ถูกนำมาทำเป็นเทคโน รีมิกซ์ ในบาง versions กลายเป็นแนว Dance Dance Revolution ในยุคต่อๆมา
