Georgia Sea Islands ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการครอบครองของอเมริกา มีเพลงของชาวอาฟริกันอเมริกันโฟล์คซอง ณ ดินแดนไกลโพ้นกว่าร้อยไมล์ ที่เกาะเล็กๆ  ขอบมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติค ดินแดนที่ชาวสลาฟหลบไปจากอาฟริกาหลายชั่วอายุคนแล้ว กล่าวขานกันถึงเรือลำเล็กๆที่ต้องใช้ความแข็งแกร่งในการพาย และพวกเขาก็มีเพลงร้องที่ไม่ซ้ำกับใคร เป็น 1ใน 2 เพลงที่ทุกคนรู้จักกันในเวลาต่อมา และถือเป็นเพลงชาวเลแห่งจอเจียร์ Michael,Row the Boat Ashore หรือ "Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore" เป็นบทเพลงเก่าแก่ของชาวอเมริกันอาฟริกันที่ถูกนำมาร้องกันบนกาะ St.Helena ซึ่งเป็นเกาะทางตอนใต้ของ South Carolina ในรัฐจอร์เจีย ช่วงที่เกิดสงครามกลางเมืองของอเมริกา , American Civil War โดยพวกทาสชาวพื้นเมืองบนเกาะที่ร้องไปด้วยพายเรือไปด้วยระหว่างการเดินทาง ถูกค้นพบครั้งแรกในบทเพลงของชาวสลาฟ ในสหรัฐอเมริกา ต่อมามีการใส่ดนตรีลงไป โดย Charles Pickard Ware ,William Francis Allen และ McKim Garrison ในปี 1867 เริ่มเป็นเพลงที่คนรู้จัก เมื่อนักร้องเพลงโฟล์ค Bob Gibson, นำมาทำลงในอัลบั้ม Carnegie Concert เมื่อปี 1957 หลังจากนั้น The Weavers นำมาอะเรนจ์ใหม่ใน The Weavers' Song Book, ที่เผยแพร่ในปี 1960, ต่อมา The Highwaymen นำไปทำใหม่ ขึ้นไปถึงอันดับ 1 ของอเมริกาในชาร์ตเพลงประเภท Pop และ Easy listening ในปี 1961 โดยตอนนั้นใช้ชื่อสั้นๆว่า "Michael" และเวอร์ชั่นนี้ขึ้นไปถึงอันดับ 1 ของเกาะอังกฤษ  ผลงานของ Lonnie Donegan ไต่ขึ้นถึงอันดับ 6 ในอังกฤษในปี 1961.ผลงานของ Harry Belafonte ที่บันทึกลงในอัลบั้ม Midnight Special ในปี 1962 ; ผลงานของ Pete Seeger ที่ร้องกับเด็กๆใน Children's Concert at Town Hall ในปี 1963 และของ Trini Lopez ทำออกมาในปี  1964.     <o Highwaymen at Spearfish, South Dakota.
