 Kyu Sakamoto 

มีเพลงญี่ปุ่นเพียงเพลงเดียวที่สามารถขึ้นไปได้ถึงอันดับ 1 ของ Billboard แล้วยังเป็นที่ 1 ในใจแฟนเพลงทั่วโลกตลอดมา เพลงนี้
ชื่อ Sukiyaki ซึ่งร้องโดย Kyu Sakamoto

ไม่มีใครไม่เคยฟังเพลงญี่ปุ่นเพลงนี้ “Ue o Muite Aruko” หรือในชื่อที่รู้จักกันดีคือ  Sukiyaki ซึ่งโด่งดังสุดฮิตในในปี 1963 และหลังจากนั้นมายังไม่เคยมีศิลปินญี่ปุ่นคนใดสามารถนำเพลงขึ้นถึงอันดับ TOP 40 ด้วยซ้ำไป

เคียว ซากาโมโต้ หรือ “Kyu-chan” เป็นชื่อเล่นของเขา
เกิดเมื่อ 10 พฤศจิกายน  1941 ที่เมืองคาวาซากิ จังหวัดคานางาวะ บิดาของเขาเป็นเจ้าของกิจการร้านอาหาร  ชีวิตนักร้องของเขาเริ่มจากสถานบันเทิงเล็กๆในชนบทตั้งแต่ปี 1959 แค่แผ่นเสียงชุดแรกที่เขาบันทึก ก็ฮิตในปีนั้นเอง และยังมีเพลงฮิตของเขาตามมาอีกหลายเพลง
ทั้งจากรายการทางโทรทัศน์ จากภาพยนตร์ และที่ยิ่งใหญ่จนดังกระหึ่มไปทั่วโลกวางแผงครั้งแรกที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่นในปีพ.ศ. 2504 คือเพลง “Ue o Muite Aruko” เฉพาะที่ญี่ปุ่นประเทศเดียวจำหน่ายได้มากกว่า 500,000 copies 

เพลงบทนี้แต่งโดยนักเปียนโนชื่อ Hachidai Nakamura
 เขียนเนื้อโดย Rokusuke Ei,  เบื้องหลังลึกๆที่มาของเพลง
เพราะเขาอกหักจากนักแสดงสาวที่ชื่อ Meiko Nakamura.

Louis Benjamin ประธานบริษัท UK’s Pye Records
ได้ยินเพลงนี้เมื่อครั้งไปเยือนญี่ปุ่น ถูกอกถุกใจมากพอกลับถึงอังกฤษ
จึงทำแผ่นออกวางจำหน่ายในปี พ.ศ. 2506  หลังจากนั้นไม่นานนัก “Sukiyaki” ก็ทะยานขึ้นสู่อันดับ Top ten ในเวลาอันรวดเร็ว
ทำให้คนทั้งโลกได้รู้จักเพราะในวันที่ 15 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2506 เพลงนี้กลายเป็นเพลงยอดนิยมอันดับ 1 ใน Billboard Chart ของอเมริกา

Kyu Sakamoto เสียชีวิตในวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2528
ขณะที่อายุได้ 43 ปี เครื่องบินโบอิ้ง 747 ของสายการบินเจแปน แอร์ไลน์ เที่ยวบินที่ JAL 123  ที่เขาโดยสารจากสนามบินฮาเนดะ ในกรุงโตเกียว เพื่อจะไปยังเมืองโอซาก้า แต่ไปไม่ถึง   เครื่องบินลำนี้ตกห่างจากกรุงโตเกียวไปทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ประมาณ 60 ไมล์ มีผู้เสียชีวิต 520 คน รวมทั้งเขาด้วยคนหนึ่ง

แม้ว่า Kyu Sakamoto จะเสียชีวิตไปแล้ว แต่เพลงของเขายังคงได้รับความชื่นชอบทั้งในญี่ปุ่นและต่างประเทศ และยังคงเป็นอมตะอยู่จนปัจจุบัน  เวอร์ชั่นที่ค่อนข้างคุ้นหูในบ้านเราถ้าเสียงผู้ชายร้องเป็นของ
วง 4 P.M และเสียงของนักร้องหญิงเป็นของ Utada Hikaru

ล่าสุด AIS นำเพลงนี้มาทำสปอตโฆษณา"One Chance in your Life" เลยกลายมาเป็นเพลงฮิตที่คนไทยถามหาอีกครั้ง
