Burgie). ผู้ซึ่งเกิดในบรุ้คลิน

สหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อปี 1926.แม่ของเขาเป็นชาวบาร์บาโดส
ส่วนพ่อเป็นชาวเวอร์จิเนียร์
แต่ที่หลายๆคนรู้จักเพลงนี้กันก็เพราะผลงานในอัลบั้ม Calypso ของ
Harry Belafonte
และนักร้องที่เอาเพลงนี้มาร้องได้แก่
Sir Lancelot และ
Jimmy Buffett.
เพลงนี้ถูกแปลไปหลายภาษา
Jamaica เป็นประเทศที่อยู่บนเกาะในภูมิภาคหมู่เกาะแอนทิลลิสใหญ่
ตั้งอยู่ในทะเลแคริบเบียน
ชื่อประเทศ "จาเมกา"
ซึ่งคนไทยมักอ่านออกเสียงเป็น
"จาไมกา"
มาจากการเรียกขานเกาะของชนพื้นเมืองตาอีโน
Taíno ที่พูดภาษาอาราวัก Arawakan
เรียกเกาะนี้ว่า "ฌาเมคา"
Xaymaca แปลได้เป็นสองความหมายคือ "ดินแดนแห่งใบไม้ผลิ"
หรือ "แดนแห่งป่าและน้ำ"
จาเมกาเคยตกอยู่ใต้อาณัติของสเปนในสมัยราชวงศ์ฮัปสบูร์ก
ซึ่งเรียกเกาะนี้ว่า ซันเดียโก
